Faith: It Starts With Your Thoughts

 

 

Watch your thoughts for they become words.
Watch your words for they become actions.

I don’t think we realize how powerful our thoughts are. Too often we gauge how we are doing by our actions when we really need to focus on what we believe or think.

What do you believe about yourself?

“One reason many struggle to act righteous is because they are trying to do what  they don’t believe they are. It is vital for us to determine how we think in order to have a lasting change in our actions. According to Romans 12:2 we are transformed not by trying harder to change but by renewing our mind. If we want our character, lifestyle or heart to be transformed, we must think differently than we now think.” (Wendy Backlund, Living from the Unseen)

We live in a world where we are bombarded with information. TV, computers, radio, phones, internet, books….. all of this influences our thoughts. Wouldn't it be nice if we had a spam filter on our brain and we could take in the information that positively influences us and kick out the information that goes against God’s word. I’m not talking about tuning out the pain and hurts of this world or living in a make believe world where we only hear about the good things, I’m talking about a filter that would allow us to see it all from God’s perspective. 

What are thoughts you need to get rid of because they go against God’s word?  We are told in Philippians 4:8, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”  If we want to change the way we think we must keep our eyes focused on Jesus.  

In the book Living from the Unseen, Wendy also shares with us that we are called to believe like Jesus not just try and act like Him.  “ What’s the difference? Well if we try and get people to act like Jesus they will be trying to “act” like something they don’t believe they are - it will just be a performance. This makes the Christian life difficult. But if we believe like Jesus, we will know we are beloved children of God… It will cause us to believe that power, healing love, wisdom, and righteousness is something we are - not something we do”

I really hope you are getting this. 

If your thoughts tell you, you’ll never make healthy lasting changes because you’ve always eaten poorly and you are way too uncoordinated and weak to ever do the exercise videos - guess what you’re right. We are NOT supposed to use our past failures to judge our future. We must declare God’s promises over our life and let the past be just that - the past. You don’t have to make the same mistakes, you don’t have to fail at your attempt to get to a healthy weight just because that’s been your pattern in the past. 

I really hope you are getting this.

Allow God’s promises to change you. Here are some of His promises that I claim in my life. Spend time in God’s word and in prayer asking Him to show you His promises and allow them to begin to change your thoughts.

I can do all things through Christ (Phil 4:13)

Nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37)

He is with me always (tons of verses on this)

I am not fearful and timid. I am powerful, loving and have self-control (2 Tim. 1:7)

Because of God’s Spirit in me, I have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)

God is my comforter (2 Cor. 1:3-4)

God works everything for my good (Romans 8:28)

God is for me so I have nothing to fear (Psalm 118:6)

**Each week meditate on one of God’s promises for your life. Ask God to help you believe it so strongly that it changes the way you think.

“If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right.” (Henry Ford) I believe Henry was only partially correct when he said this.  It’s not about believing we can or can’t do something, it’s about believing what we can do with God’s help.  

I am only going to share this with you today. I know I typically discuss 2 topics but because I think this is so important I want you to go back and read this again. 

Weekly Goals

Each week you will be asked to set goals. Your goals can be about faith, fitness or food (or all 3). I highly recommend that you write them down and post them on your mirror or someplace you will see them often. When setting goals make them action oriented goals, not result goals.  Stay focused on doing the next right thing and be patient with the results.
